Step Back in Time

December 17. 2009

We may have mentioned this before, but we love working in Argenta.  There are so many interesting people to meet, and the community is amazing.  People rally together to make things happen.  People don’t ignore each other or compete with each other.  No, we’re all here to help each other expand our businesses and make this place an awesome one in which to work, play, and live.

Today, we want to introduce you to V.L. Cox.  She is a very talented artist that lives and works in the Argenta area of North Little Rock.  We first met Cox many years ago when she unselfishly donated artwork to the Centers for Youth & Families.  Since then, we’ve kept up with her career, but never really knew her until we opened up shop in the neighborhood. She is just one of those people you instantly like.  She is friendly, outgoing, and ready to help.  And she’s also a great artist.

V.L. CoxCox has been known for her abstract paintings.  Over the last few years, however, she has branched off into two other styles which we like even more.  Her American South Screen Door Series has landed her in the Delta Show at the Arkansas Arts Center and at the Historic Arkansas Museum.  This series is one in which Cox is anxious to continue, and we’re glad.  The series evokes a time past.  Utilizing original old screen doors and signs from a bygone era, Cox creates realistic portraits of Southern living when she was growing up.  Each time we look at one of her doors, we can hear the slam as children (maybe us) run from the farmhouse to the gardens on a hot summer day.  And there’s Grandma, or and Aunt, Uncle, friend or old dog looking out and watching us disappear into the cool grasses and carefree hours of childhood.

Cox’s other new series is the Age of Wonder.  Using found objects from childhood and her signature abstract style, Cox creates works for every budget and every memory.  “Play”  “Blast Off!”  “Dream” the art beckons.  And we do just that as we enjoy seeing the world through Cox’s eyes – which aren’t so different from ours, it turns out.
